Steve and I ventured to Indy for Gen Con again. It was a much-needed vacay for Steve, as he is working during the day and teaching online classes at night. I needed to get out of the house, as enrollment is down where I teach, so many of us did not get a class in August. Boo. I will be teaching Comp I at the end of this month, though. I've been doing housework, going through stuff for a Labor Day garage sale, setting up Lia Sophia jewelry soirees, playing with a new musical ensemble,doing a musical performance at the LaSalle Branch Library, submitting a proposal for a travel grant this fall, submitting resumes and writing samples for freelancing opportunities, and writing my novel, so I have been keeping busy. Plus, I'll be taking one class this fall on magazine writing and editing, so perhaps it's a good thing to take a little time off between teaching sessions. However, I don't rest well, especially at home. So, it was great to run away from home for a few days, and then return home to our loving kitties and our normal routines. We can both focus better.
Gen Con was fun: so much fun. We arrived on Thursday night in a rainstorm. Fortunately, the weather cleared and we had sunshine for the remainder of the trip. Steve and I both attended sessions on Friday and Saturday. My favorite session was New York Times Best Selling Author Michael Stackpole's lecture on 21 days to a novel. The good news is that I have an awesome guideline to draft my book. The bad news is that I'm 27,000 words into the draft and realize I'm doing it wrong. So, do I scratch what I've written and start over? The perfectionist side of me says, "Start over." The pragmatic side of me says, "Keep doing what I'm doing and just get the words out." Guess what, the pragmatic side wins. The perfectionist can go chill out somewhere. Go pull some weeds out in the back yard while the pragmatic side keeps churning out those words. Peck, peck, type.
We also spent time with friends in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Steve and I played in a D&D campaign in the lounge at the Marriott. That's the beauty of the con. It's four days of playtime for grownups, although there are a lot of second and third generation gamers present in strollers. Overall, it was a great time. I look forward to saving up for next year's adventures.
